Temple Shelter  Fontengon Temple to the God Machu  near Chiayi    Rock told us that this barn-like structure went up over the temple after the 1999 earthquake (see later photos).    However, this certainly isn't going to help in another quake!   We figure they put the structure up to reduce weathering damage to the intricate sculptures on the roof, and that the timing is coincidental.

Jio Fener Mountain  Landslide occurred during September 21, 1999  Mw 7.7 earthquake near Chi-Chi, Taiwan  (display image separately for full scale)    Incredibly, a man rode in his house from the top to the bottom of the landslide,    stunned but otherwise unscathed. The residents of the valley were not so lucky.
