Malaysia

After leaving Thailand, I proceeded directly to Kuala Lumpur (KL), Malaysia, where I met up with my friend Matt Sisk. Matt had begun traveling around the world in the opposite direction to Chris and me, leaving about six months after us. We spent a day kicking around KL before taking a flight to Kota Kinabalu (KK) in the Malaysian state of Sabah, on the island of Borneo. There, we climbed Mt. Kinabalu, went hiking at Poring Hot Springs, visited the orang-utan sanctuary in Sepilok, roughed it for few days in the jungle at Uncle Tan's, stopped to smell the flowers at the Tenom Agricultural Research Center, and then took a train ride back to KK. Upon returning to KL, we met our friends from Houston, Jen, Rich, and Sid, and then all went to relax on Pulau Tioman, a resort island offshore of Peninsular Malaysia.
